You insert a capsule, close the lever, and nothing happens — or the machine blinks in an error pattern.

This is almost always a dirty barcode reader, a misloaded capsule, or a machine that needs a reset. None of these require service.

Find your symptom below and go straight to the right fix.

Fix 1 of 3

Clean the Capsule Barcode Reader

💰 Free
Why This Happens

Vertuo machines read a barcode on the capsule rim to determine brew settings. Coffee residue, condensation, or oily film on the reader lens — or on the capsule rim — blocks the scan and the machine refuses to brew.

1
Open the machine head and remove any capsule inside.
2
Wipe the capsule reader — the small dark window inside the head. Use a dry cotton swab or soft cloth barely dampened with water.
3
Wipe the rim of a fresh capsule gently with a dry cloth before inserting — sometimes the issue is on the capsule, not the machine.
4
Close the head, insert the clean capsule, and try brewing. Don’t use alcohol or abrasive cleaners near the optical reader.
💡 Good Habit

Store capsules in their original sleeve — exposure to humidity can make the barcode difficult to read.

Fix 2 of 3

Check That You’re Using the Right Capsule Type

💰 Free
Why This Happens

Nespresso has two incompatible systems — Original Line and Vertuo. Original Line capsules are small and pointy; Vertuo capsules are larger with a foil lid. Using the wrong type will result in a no-read every single time.

1
Check your machine model — it’s usually printed on the bottom or front panel.
2
Original Line machines (Essenza, Pixie, CitiZ) use small, narrow capsules with an aluminum foil top.
3
Vertuo machines (VertuoPlus, Evoluo, Next) use large dome-shaped capsules with a barcode on the rim.
4
Verify any third-party or store-brand capsules are specifically labeled for your machine type.
💡 Quick Check

If the capsule doesn’t drop smoothly into the holder or sits too high, it’s the wrong type for your machine.

Fix 3 of 3

Factory Reset the Machine

💰 Free
Why This Happens

Nespresso machines can enter a fault state after an error, a power surge, or a failed brew cycle. A factory reset clears the error memory and restores normal operation.

1
Consult your specific model’s manual for the reset sequence — it varies by model.
2
Common Vertuo reset With the machine off, hold the button for 7 seconds until the light blinks orange, then release.
3
Common Original reset Turn off, hold lever down for 3 seconds, release, then brew a water-only cycle.
4
Run a water-only rinse cycle after resetting before inserting a capsule.
💡 Last Resort

If the machine still won’t read capsules after a reset and the reader is clean, contact Nespresso support — machines under warranty are often replaced free of charge.

🤔 Still Not Working After All the Fixes?

If the machine still won’t read capsules after cleaning, checking compatibility, and resetting — the barcode reader sensor itself may have failed, which is an internal hardware issue.

Nespresso machines under two years old are often covered under warranty. Call Nespresso support at 1-800-562-1465 — they’re known for good customer service and often ship a replacement.
