Who Is John?

Hi — I’m John.

I grew up in a working-class family — my dad was a coal miner, my mom worked in a paper plant. Nobody handed us anything, and nobody had time for complicated explanations. You figured things out in plain language or you didn’t figure them out at all. That’s still how I think.

I served six years as a Navy Seabee — the construction battalion. We built things, fixed things, and got the job done without a lot of fuss. That ethic has never left me.

After the Navy I spent a decade in the coal mines, then retrained in IT. I spent the next 21 years in networking and PC support — and the last five of those running my own senior-focused tech help business on the Treasure Coast of Florida.

Those five years working directly with seniors changed me. I sat at kitchen tables with smart, capable people who felt left behind by technology they never asked for. Medicare letters they couldn’t decode. Phones that confused them. Emails that scared them. Not because they weren’t sharp — but because nobody had ever explained it to them in plain English.

That’s why I started JohnExplainsIt.com. Not to sell anything. Not to impress anyone. Just to be the plain-English explainer I wished those folks had sooner.

Background

A little history.

The path from coal miner to plain-English explainer wasn’t a straight line — but it all adds up.

1972 – 1978

🎖️ U.S. Navy Seabees

Six years as a Navy Seabee — the construction battalion. Built things, fixed things, served overseas. Learned to solve problems with whatever was available and get the job done without complaint.

1978 – 1988

⛏️ Coal Miner

A decade working underground. Honest, hard, unglamorous work. Built a work ethic that nobody has ever been able to take away.

1989 – 2010s

💻 IT, Networking & PC Support

Retrained and spent over two decades in IT — networks, systems, desktop support. Learned that most technology problems aren’t complicated; they just need someone who can explain them without making you feel dumb.

5 Years on the Treasure Coast

👴 Senior-Focused Tech Help Business

Ran a PC repair and tech help business in Vero Beach, Florida focused specifically on seniors. Sat at kitchen tables, explained things slowly, and watched people light up when something finally made sense. The most rewarding work of my career.

How John Works

Three things you can count on.

🚫

No Jargon. Ever.

If John can’t explain it in plain English, he doesn’t explain it. Tech words exist to impress people. John isn’t trying to impress anyone.

🤝

No Judgment. Ever.

There are no dumb questions here. The only dumb question is the one you didn’t ask because you were afraid of how it would sound.

🎯

Straight Answers.

No runaround. No upsells. No “it depends” without an explanation. John tells you what you need to know and stops talking when he’s done.

From John

Why this matters to me.

I’ve watched people apologize for not understanding something that was never explained to them properly in the first place. That’s backwards. The failure isn’t on the person asking the question — it’s on whoever gave the original explanation.

When I was running my tech help business in Vero Beach, I had a woman in her eighties show me a Medicare letter she’d been worried about for three weeks. She’d been losing sleep over it. It turned out to be a routine annual notice — nothing to do, nothing to worry about. Three weeks of anxiety over something I could explain in five minutes.

That’s what this site is about. Not technology, not government letters, not scams specifically — just the gap between confusing information and the plain-English explanation that should have come with it. I’m here to close that gap, one question at a time.

If you have a question — about anything — just ask. That’s what I’m here for.

“I’ve been getting those Medicare letters for years and just filing them away because I couldn’t understand them. John explained the whole thing in about ten minutes. I actually feel in control now.”

Margaret T. · Sarasota, FL

★★★★★

“My son kept forwarding me ‘helpful’ tech articles that just confused me more. John’s explanations actually make sense. It’s like having a neighbor who happens to know everything about computers.”

Robert K. · Venice, FL

C
★★★★★

“I was terrified I’d accidentally clicked on a scam. John looked at it, told me exactly what happened and what to do, and I didn’t have to feel embarrassed for one second. That meant a lot.”
